- **Event Name**: Seeing the Story: Capturing the World as a Professional Photographer | Lecture Presentation
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 17 Jan, 2026 at 01:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Join the West Baton Rouge Museum on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 1 PM for a lecture on Seeing the Story: Capturing the World as a Professional Photographer presented by Oklahoma-based filmmaker, producer, news photographer, and storm chaser, Jazz Bishop.
Born and raised in Oklahoma, Jazz Bishop has lived around the country and visited places across the globe. He has worked with the film industry since 2010, and his diverse career spans cinematography as a producer and in the media as a news photographer. Bishop’s work has been viewed worldwide and featured in publications such as National Geographic, Time, and The Associated Press, on the big screen, and on the Weather Channel on TV.
This program is being offered in conjunction with the current exhibit, Gone But Not Forgotten: Black Cemeteries of West Baton Rouge, on display January 10 – March 8, 2026. This exhibit examines the historic lost burial grounds of enslaved Black people across the parish as well as those cemeteries that are in danger of becoming lost to Mother Nature or land development. Many of these were started by Black Churches or Benevolent Societies in the latter part of the 19th century. Examples of Bishop’s photography are included in the exhibit created by guest curator, genealogist, cemetery mapper, and founder of the nonprofit, Westside Cemetery Preservation, Debbie Martin. While working on the film Star Bright in Baton Rouge in 2017, Bishop met Debbie Martin and was deeply inspired by her efforts to restore cemeteries of the enslaved. Her work motivated him to begin documenting these sites through photography, blending his background in film and storytelling with a passion for preserving history.
